Roots of Faith
I believe a relationship with God is deeply personal. It’s no surprise there are so many disagreements about religion. What should be taken literally, what requires deeper reflection, and how it all applies to our individual lives. But I’ve come to believe that true understanding can only be found within.
To me, God is love. When we center our lives around love, we open ourselves to real prosperity. Not just material success, but peace, purpose, and connection. One of the hardest, yet most important things we can do is define what our own relationship with God looks like. For many of us, there's a pivotal moment, a kind of catalyst, that forces us to choose a direction. It may feel like there’s no other option. That’s when God is loud, almost impossible to ignore.
But more often, God speaks in quieter ways. Subtle nudges that show up throughout our lives. It's only when we’re present and aware that we notice them. I believe that the quiet voice we all carry inside us even from childhood is God. The conversations with that voice may change as we grow, but the presence stays the same.
What I didn’t understand for a long time is that being human, having a soul, a conscience, that voice…it must point to something greater. Looking back, I believe God was always with me. I just needed to walk my path to recognize it. Somehow, I made it through some very dark moments. I truly believe it was God’s soft whispers, the ones that surfaced in the middle of chaos, saying, “This isn’t right” that saved me more than once.
As I continue to grow in my faith, I find myself reflecting more on scripture. Psalm 1, verses 2 and 3, speak of becoming like a tree planted by water. Strong, grounded, and nourished by God’s word. It reminds me of the trees in the swamp where my husband and I hunt. When the floodwaters rise, only the trees with weak roots are swept away. The rest stand tall.
In life, those floodwaters show up as heartbreak, anxiety, gossip, and chaos…anything that tries to pull us away from what matters. Our roots are our values, our integrity, and our faith. When those are strong, we don’t fall. We grow. We thrive.
That’s the quiet strength that comes from walking with God every day. I’m just grateful I finally understand that now.
